BMW keys are high-security by design, and each generation of the brand’s immobiliser needs its own approach. We handle many 1, 3 and 5 Series, X models and Minis with BMW systems, programming keys at your car by booked appointment.
BMW names its security modules rather than its keys. The module in your car decides how a new key is made.
Across Bournemouth, Poole and Sandbanks we program keys for everything from a 1 Series on a Southbourne side street to an X5 on a Branksome Park driveway. BMW owners often worry that only the dealer can help. For many models that is not the case, and booking a mobile appointment can save a trip and a long wait. We are honest about limits too: if your exact model or module is not supported, we will tell you before you book rather than after we arrive. If you still have one working key, adding a spare now is far simpler than starting from scratch when it is lost.
EWS
Older BMWs up to the mid-2000s. Keys are matched to the EWS module, often by reading its data.
CAS (CAS2, CAS3, CAS4)
The 1 Series, 3 Series E90 and 5 Series E60/F10 era. The CAS module stores the key data, and later versions need careful EEPROM or diagnostic work.
FEM and BDC
F-series and G-series cars like the F30 3 Series and newer X models use these modules. Programming is advanced and model-specific.
Comfort Access smart keys
Keyless entry and start, with the key detected by the car. Both the proximity and remote functions must be set up.
How much does a BMW key replacement cost?
A lost BMW key costs £220–£470 on average and a BMW spare key £170–£310, depending on the key type and model year. Newer VW, BMW and Land Rover spares are typically £350+, and some newer prestige models cost more. We confirm a fixed price from the model, year and registration before booking.
BMW dealer or auto locksmith – which is better?
A BMW dealer may need the car brought in and the key ordered. A mobile auto locksmith cuts and programs the key at your car in one visit. BMW spare keys typically cost 30–60% less than a main dealer, with the biggest savings on cars up to 2013. Some of the newest BMW systems are dealer-only, and we will tell you before booking.
