Golfs, Polos and Transporters are everywhere across BH postcodes, and Volkswagen keys are among the most technical we program. Each generation uses a different immobiliser, so we check your exact model and year before quoting, then cut and program the key at your car.
Volkswagen groups its security into immobiliser generations. Knowing which one your car uses tells us how the new key must be prepared and how long programming takes.
Around Bournemouth we see everything from first-car Polos in Winton to Tiguans on Broadstone driveways and Transporters belonging to Christchurch and Poole tradespeople. Many arrive with the original single key, or with a flip key that has started to fall apart. Because Volkswagen prices can vary a lot between generations, we always tell you which immobiliser your car has and why before you agree to anything. If you still have one working key, a spare now is the cheapest and simplest way to protect yourself, particularly on older Golfs and Polos where the dealer saving is greatest.
Immobiliser 3 and 4
Most VWs from the early 2000s to around 2012, including the Golf Mk5 and Mk6 and the Polo 6R. Keys are programmed through the instrument cluster, which holds the security data.
MQB platform (Immobiliser 5)
The Golf Mk7 onwards, the newer Polo, the Tiguan and the T-Roc. These keys use a newer chip and stronger encryption, so programming is more involved.
Keyless Access
Higher-trim models open and start without pressing a button. The key and car exchange encrypted signals, and both the remote and proximity functions must be set up.
Transporter and Caddy keys
Commercial VWs share much of the car technology, so the same careful checks apply to working vans.
How much does a Volkswagen key replacement cost?
A lost Volkswagen key costs £220–£470 on average and a Volkswagen spare key £170–£310, depending on the key type and model year. Newer VW, BMW and Land Rover spares are typically £350+, and some newer prestige models cost more. We confirm a fixed price from the model, year and registration before booking.
Volkswagen dealer or auto locksmith – which is better?
A Volkswagen dealer may need the car brought in and the key ordered. A mobile auto locksmith cuts and programs the key at your car in one visit. Volkswagen spare keys typically cost 30–60% less than a main dealer, with the biggest savings on cars up to 2013. We quote a fixed price first.

Snapped flip-key housings

Higher prices on newer models
Newer VW, BMW & Land Rover keys: typically £350+. We give the real figure before booking so there are no surprises.
