Ford is the most common badge on Dorset driveways, and its keys are some of the most familiar we cut. From an older Fiesta with a plain transponder key to a Kuga with keyless entry or a Transit Custom that a business depends on, we cut and program Ford keys at the vehicle by booked appointment.
Ford has used its Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) since the late 1990s. Every key holds a small transponder chip that the car must recognise before the engine will start. The type of chip and the way it is programmed has changed over the years.
Ford work comes from every corner of our patch: Fiestas outside Bournemouth University halls, Focuses on Christchurch estates and Transit Customs belonging to Poole and Ferndown trades.
Early PATS transponder keys
Older Fiestas, Focuses and Mondeos use a plain key with a chip in the head. These are usually the quickest and cheapest Ford keys to copy.
Remote and flip keys
Most Fords from the mid-2000s combine the chip with remote locking in a flip key. We cut the blade to your lock and program both the immobiliser and the remote buttons.
Ford Intelligent Access
Keyless entry and push-button start on models like the Kuga, Focus and S-Max. The car talks to the key by radio, so programming is done through the diagnostic port.
Transit and commercial keys
Transit, Transit Custom and Ranger keys follow the same PATS family but often carry extra buttons for side and rear doors.
How much does a Ford key replacement cost?
A lost Ford key costs £220–£470 on average and a Ford spare key £170–£310, depending on the key type and model year. Newer VW, BMW and Land Rover spares are typically £350+, and some newer prestige models cost more. We confirm a fixed price from the model, year and registration before booking.
Ford dealer or auto locksmith – which is better?
A Ford dealer may need the car brought in and the key ordered. A mobile auto locksmith cuts and programs the key at your car in one visit. Ford spare keys typically cost 30–60% less than a main dealer, with the biggest savings on cars up to 2013. We quote a fixed price first.
Practical takeaways
Have the Ford model, year and registration ready.
A spare costs far less than a lost-key job.
Ask whether lost keys can be removed from the car.
Ford key problems we see most
Worn flip-key blades
The fold-out blade on older Ford keys loosens with use until it stops locking upright or snaps at the pivot.
One key left on a used car
Plenty of second-hand Fords are sold with a single key. A spare now avoids a far bigger bill later.
Vans off the road
A lost Transit key can stop a working day. We plan van appointments around where the vehicle is parked.
These are the Fords we are asked about most around Bournemouth. If yours is not listed, send the registration and we will check.
Whether it is a family Focus in Kinson or a works Transit on a Ferndown industrial estate, the process is the same: send us the registration, agree a fixed price, and we cut and program the key at the vehicle.
