Which Mini key do you have?

Because Mini is part of BMW, its key systems follow BMW’s module generations.

Minis are a familiar sight in Bournemouth, Southbourne and Poole, from older Cooper hatches to newer Countrymen used as family cars. Many owners are surprised to learn their Mini key has BMW technology inside, which is why programming needs the right equipment and knowledge of each module. We check whether your car uses EWS, CAS or FEM, explain what that means in plain English and confirm the fixed price before booking. The round fob used on many second-generation Minis is particularly prone to wear: if it no longer slides into the slot properly, or the car does not respond when you press start, a new programmed key is often the answer. If you still have one working key, a spare is the sensible next step. Older Minis show the biggest savings compared with a dealer. Where fitted, we also set up Comfort Access so the doors and push-button start work without taking the key out of your pocket. Every key is tested at the car before we leave.

EWS (early BMW Minis)

Models from 2001 to around 2006 use a traditional bladed key with a chip.

CAS round fob keys

The R56 Hatch and similar models use the round fob that slots into the dashboard.

FEM and BDC

The F56 Hatch and newer models use these modules, with a more conventional smart key.

Comfort Access

Keyless entry and start on higher-spec Minis.

How much does a Mini key replacement cost?

A lost Mini key costs £220–£470 on average and a Mini spare key £170–£310, depending on the key type and model year. Newer VW, BMW and Land Rover spares are typically £350+, and some newer prestige models cost more. We confirm a fixed price from the model, year and registration before booking.

Mini dealer or auto locksmith – which is better?

A Mini dealer may need the car brought in and the key ordered. A mobile auto locksmith cuts and programs the key at your car in one visit. Mini spare keys typically cost 30–60% less than a main dealer, with the biggest savings on cars up to 2013. We quote a fixed price first.

Practical takeaways

  • Have the Mini model, year and registration ready.
  • A spare costs far less than a lost-key job.
  • Ask whether lost keys can be removed from the car.

Mini key issues

Fob will not go into the slot

Worn or damaged round fobs can stop working. A new programmed key resolves it.

One key with the car

Many used Minis come with one key. A spare is good insurance.
